Tektrol Vortex Flow Meter: High-Temperature Saturated Steam Process Controls

Quick Answer

Quick Answer: Silver Instruments supplies vortex flow meters for high-temperature saturated steam process control. A Tektrol vortex flow meter replacement needs pressure compensation, correct DN sizing, and a 4-20 mA HART output. Send us your pressure (bar), temperature (°C), pipe size (DN), and flow range for a same-day quote.

Why Saturated Steam Metering Fails Without Pressure Compensation

Saturated steam is not a dry gas. Its density changes with pressure. A vortex flow meter reads flow velocity. Volume flow alone does not tell you mass flow in kg/h. If steam pressure moves from 8 bar g to 10 bar g, the density error can push mass flow reading off by more than 10 percent. We have seen this on customer sites in Vietnam and Malaysia where boiler load swings between shifts.

That is why a high-temperature saturated steam meter needs a pressure transmitter or a temperature sensor. In practice, pressure compensation is faster than temperature compensation for saturated steam. The pressure signal changes immediately with boiler load. Silver Instruments vortex flow meters accept a 4-20 mA pressure input. They can also use an internal PT100 for temperature compensation. Both methods work. Both have limits.

Tektrol Vortex Flow Meter Replacement and Equivalent Options

Many plants in Southeast Asia and the Middle East run Tektrol vortex flow meters on steam headers. When a sensor fails or the electronics board drifts, engineers want a replacement without cutting pipe or changing flanges. Silver Automation Instruments can cross-reference the DN size, flange standard, pressure rating, and output type. Send the Tektrol tag plate photo and steam operating data. We quote a Silver Instruments vortex flow meter with the same face-to-face length and 4-20 mA HART output.

The replacement normally includes a 316 stainless steel body, a high-temperature vortex sensor rated to 350 °C, and a local LCD display. For saturated steam above 180 °C, we use a pedestal sensor design. That keeps transmitter electronics away from the hot pipe. The design reduces drift on long steam runs.

Sizing High-Temperature Saturated Steam Flow

Sizing is the part most engineers skip. A vortex meter has a lower flow cut-off. If the pipe is oversized, the meter may not read flow at low boiler turndown. We size vapor velocity at normal flow and minimum flow. For saturated steam, normal velocity should stay between 20 and 45 m/s at operating pressure. Minimum velocity must stay above the Reynolds number limit for the meter. Below that limit the pulses disappear and the totalizer stops.

Silver Instruments vortex flow meters cover DN15 to DN300. For a typical DN80 saturated steam line at 12 bar g and 190 °C with normal flow of 1500 kg/h, use a DN80 Silver Instruments vortex flow meter with 4-20 mA HART and a PT100 insert. Provide your steam pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size DN, minimum flow, normal flow, and maximum flow in kg/h. If you have wet steam or carryover, tell us. A vortex meter can handle some wetness. Heavy liquid

slugs can damage the sensor. In that case a separator or steam dryer upstream is required.

Outputs and Process Control Wiring

For process control, 4-20 mA HART is the standard output. The current loop sends flow data to a PLC or DCS. HART allows remote setup and diagnostics. For energy monitoring, you can add Modbus RS485. You can also use a pulse output for totalizing. The pulse output works well with boiler house PLCs and building management systems. We have shipped meters with pulse output to dairies in Australia and palm oil mills in Indonesia.

If the installation is in a hazardous area, choose the ATEX Zone 1 version. The electronics housing is flameproof. The sensor is certified for saturated steam service. Do not install a non-certified meter in a Zone 1 steam house. Inspectors in the Middle East check this carefully.

Field Notes From Steam Applications

A food processing plant in the Philippines replaced three Tektrol vortex flow meters on 6 inch steam headers. Steam pressure was 9 bar g and temperature was 178 °C. The old meters had condensation inside the electronics housing. Silver Instruments supplied DN150 vortex flow meters with remote electronics and a PT100 insert. The plant now reads mass flow in kg/h on the DCS with less than 1 percent error.

A chemical plant in Saudi Arabia asked for a high-temperature saturated steam meter for a reactor jacket. The line size was DN40. Pressure was 15 bar g and temperature was 201 °C. Normal flow was 220 kg/h. Minimum flow was 35 kg/h. Because minimum flow was below the DN40 lower limit, we recommended a DN25 meter with reduced flanges. That kept the meter in range during low steam demand. This is the kind of detail that changes a quote.

FAQ

Can a vortex flow meter measure saturated steam mass flow directly?

No. The vortex sensor measures velocity. For mass flow in kg/h, you need density compensation. Use pressure compensation for saturated steam. Silver Instruments electronics can accept a 4-20 mA pressure transmitter signal.

What is the maximum temperature for a Silver Instruments vortex flow meter?

The high-temperature version is rated for 350 °C. Most saturated steam applications stay below 250 °C. For steam above 200 °C, use the remote electronics version.

Can you replace a Tektrol vortex flow meter without changing the pipe?

In most cases yes. Send the tag plate photo, face-to-face length, flange standard, and steam data. We match the dimensions and output.

What output should I choose for steam process control?

Use 4-20 mA HART for analog control. Add Modbus RS485 if you want digital data. Use pulse output for totalizing only.

What data do you need for a quote?

Pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size DN, minimum flow, normal flow, and maximum flow in kg/h. Also tell us the pipe schedule and flange standard.
