# Heavy Fuel Oil Flow Meter DN15: Accurate Measurement for HFO Bunker Systems ## Quick Answer A heavy fuel oil flow meter DN15 handles flow rates from 20 to 250 L/h at viscosities up to 700 cSt at 50°C. Silver Automation Instruments supplies positive displacement and Coriolis meters for HFO bunkering, boiler feed, and generator supply lines. Send us your pressure (bar), temperature (°C), pipe size (DN15), and flow range (L/h) for a quote. ## Why DN15 HFO Flow Meters Need Special Engineering Heavy fuel oil is not diesel. It behaves differently at different temperatures. At 20°C, HFO can be solid. At 50°C, it flows at around 380 cSt. At 80°C, viscosity drops to 30 cSt. A standard flow meter designed for water will fail on HFO within weeks. Most engineers skip this part. They buy a generic flow meter. Then they call us three months later asking why the meter stopped reading. The answer is always the same. The meter was not rated for heavy fuel oil. Last year a customer in Vietnam asked us to replace their failed turbine meter on a DN15 HFO line feeding a 500 kW generator. The turbine bearings had seized. The HFO had solidified inside the meter housing when the system shut down overnight. We installed an oval gear flow meter with PT100 temperature sensor and 4-20 mA HART output. That meter has been running for 14 months without a single issue. ## HFO Characteristics That Affect Flow Meter Selection Heavy fuel oil has properties that destroy some meter types and leave others unaffected. Viscosity: HFO viscosity ranges from 30 cSt at 80°C to 700 cSt at 50°C. Some bunker grades go higher. Positive displacement meters handle this naturally. Turbine meters lose accuracy above 10 cS

t. Vortex meters stop working above 300 cSt. Temperature: HFO must be heated before pumping. Typical operating temperature is 50°C to 80°C. The flow meter must have a heating jacket or electric trace heating. Without heating, the HFO solidifies inside the meter. Wax and asphaltenes: HFO contains waxy compounds that precipitate at low temperature. A Coriolis mass flow meter handles this well because it has no moving parts. However, the meter body must be heated. Particulates: HFO from different refineries varies in sediment content. Some HFO contains catalyst fines from the refining process. These fines are hard and abrasive. A gear meter with hardened steel gears lasts longer than standard stainless steel. ## Flow Meter Types for DN15 Heavy Fuel Oil ### Oval Gear Flow Meter This is the most common choice for DN15 HFO lines. The oval gear design is a positive displacement meter. Each rotation of the gears displaces a fixed volume of fluid. The meter measures actual volume passed through the housing. A DN15 oval gear meter typically handles 20 to 250 L/h. Accuracy is 0.5% of reading down to 0.2% of reading with calibration. The pressure drop is low, around 0.2 bar at full flow. The meter can include a magnetic pickoff for pulse output. Add a temperature sensor for compensated flow measurement. The standard material is cast iron with hardened steel gears. For HFO with high sulfur content, use 316 stainless steel. We supply oval gear meters with ATEX Zone 1 approval for marine engine rooms. The meter body includes a heating jacket with 1/4 inch BSP connections for steam or thermal oil. ### Coriolis Mass Flow Meter Coriolis meters measure mass flow directly. This is useful for HFO because density changes with tempe
